Throughout most major urban areas, reported crime rates have decreased steadily in recent years, but despite that, fear of crime still remains as strong as ever and it would seem that we all crave the assurance that security gives us.

Previously, home security systems were grossly expensive, their costs far outweighing any potential benefit they may have offered. They certainly were not for the average household. And in some cases, having a home security system was sort of a status symbol. With recent changes in the market, home security systems are now readily available both in terms of availability and reasonable pricing to all.

While people tend to be rather lazy in thinking that buying a home security system will solve their problems and make their home into Fort Knox, they fail to appreciate the greatest threat/improvement to security: their attitude and their awareness. Being aware of the weak points of your home, parts which offer a point of entry to the potential burglar, or the bushes that can conceal him better, is just as important as the latest, cutting edge home security system.

There is a huge range of home security products to choose from -- from the basic such as stronger bolts and locks to the more high-end products such as surveillance equipment and motion sensors. Such pieces of equipment are very reasonably priced, and should be within the range of most household budgets.

Safes are another great way to keep valuables secure. Safes in the wall cost in the region of $50, while it's a little more for a floor safe. Panic rooms are also another security feature that is both popular and cheaper than before. Panic rooms are essentially a giant safe, where access is impossible to intruders, and which are totally fireproof as well.

Lighting systems are also an underestimated and overlooked security feature, but if you attach them to your personal computer, you can then program the lights to turn on and off at random times of the day, thereby giving the illusion that there is still activity in the house. While this may sound simple, it is another stalwart layer of protection in deterring a would-be burglar or thief from targeting your home.

Things may have gotten more high-tech, but the old methods are just as effective as well, and should not be overlooked. Having a guard dog is a fantastic deterrent to even the most determined of burglars, as dogs can run faster than humans and a dog bite is rather nasty.

Neighborhood schemes are also becoming increasingly popular; all it takes is one person to be alert for any suspicious activity and to raise the alarm if need be. Criminals don’t like witnesses, so to be caught in the act is not the most desirable outcome for them!

If you have a good look at the options available for you, you are sure to find a huge number of security options and plenty that are quite comfortably within your budget.
