The first burglar alarms and security systems were primitive and unreliable. More often than not, they gave false alarms. The older intruder alert systems were guilty of being too sensitive when they should not have been and not sensitive enough when they needed to be. Previous intruder alert systems were expensive and inefficient because of the additional components, such as wiring that had to be added. However, intruder alert systems have grown and developed in the last couple of decades, incorporating and making greater use of the breakthroughs in technology.

Modern housing nowadays is being built specifically designed to better accommodate intruder alert systems, even allowing for the inclusion of personal computers so as to better enhance security systems with the likes of "intelligence tracking." There are also wireless security systems readily available for those who do not have such facilities within their home or indeed who would rather have a wireless system.

A major advantage offered by wireless intruder alert systems is that they can be built progressively and in steps. This means that if time and or money is limited then the project can be delayed until such a time when those resources are more freely available. It also means that key areas of the home such as windows can be focused on and secured first with the other areas left due to their lower degree of priority. It also means that homeowners can decide whether or not they feel comfortable with a particular wireless intruder alert system since they can construct it in stages to allow for a "testing of the water."

Wireless intruder alert systems are exceptionally easy to set up and maintain, both in themselves, and in comparison to wire-intensive intruder alert systems. Intruder alert systems that utilize wires would require major changes and alterations to the physical layout and structure of the house. This carries with it huge cost and time as well as stress implications to homeowners.

Another major breakthrough is the ease of access to the information collated by an intruder alert system. In the early days, homeowners had to rely on a professional company to handle all the security hiccups and issues. Now, intruder alert systems can be readily controlled and configured by homeowners themselves and they can be kept up to date as to the status, even on their cell phone!

Video equipment has came a long way as well, allowing for the likes of motion detectors and thermal detection equipment to be implemented and more effectively as well. Infrared and thermal detection becomes obviously important during night time when visibility is very limited. Remember too that night time is when the vast majority of burglaries occur. Because such intruder alert systems operate by detecting and locking onto body heat (which cannot be easily disguised if at all), this means that even if the burglar should hide, his body heat signature will be detected allowing for him to be caught much easier. The quality of such technology in terms of the crystal clear resolutions provided makes the apprehension and prosecution of burglars much easier, as the issues of reasonable doubt will be soon dismissed with a blown up picture of the burglar.
