Home Security Tips - How to Make Sure Your House Doesn't Become a Burglar's Target

According to FBI statistics, a burglary is committed every 12 seconds. The best way you can avoid having your house become a burglar's target is to remain alert and identify the weaknesses of your home. Professional and career burglars try very hard and take pain staking efforts to ensure that they are not caught, and they do this by ensuring that they choose low-risk victims.

The less sophisticated burglar will smash a window or door, grab the nearest item he thinks is of value and then run as fast as he can from the scene of the crime. The more professional burglars will be more methodical in their approach. Stealth is imperative to the professional burglar, so night time is their usual time to pounce This is when there are not so many people around and there are shadows to provide them with the perfect cover.

Always make sure to pay special close attention to the parts of your home where a potential burglar could enter without being seen and detected. For many houses, these will be the windows on the side, but really it will depend on the actual layout and structure of the house. Sliding glass windows need to have a strong wooden or metal dowel at least. However, this is useless if your window can be easily lifted from the frame.

Luckily, there is a cheap and very easy way to better secure your home. All you have to do is drill a hole through the window frame and burrow through until you drill into the wall frame that is propping it up. With the hole drilled through, install a kit that has a spring-loaded mechanism into the hole. This means that the window has to be propped open by a person, otherwise it will slam shut. This makes it more awkward for the burglar to simply jam the window open and climb in.

Only the most daring of burglars will actually be prepared to smash glass so as to gain entry to the house, but it can and does happen. There are two ways to deal with this. One, you can ensure that access to the windows is barred by means of iron bars, which will make it impossible for the burglar to gain access to the actual glass itself or two, you can have an alarm that will go off when the glass is broken.

As mentioned before, burglars operate under cover of darkness and so reducing any excess shrubbery or bushes is crucial so as to reduce the number of hiding spots that the potential burglar may make use of. Remember, no system of protection is 100% secure, nor unbreakable. However, by adopting such home security measures, you will significantly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of burglary.
