What You Need to Know About Home Automation Security Systems
With the Internet and the huge proportion of the population with a personal computer, there has been a huge impact on home automation security systems. This is achieved by a combination of both software and hardware, which together means that video surveillance equipment can be better used for so called "intelligent tracking." These home security systems are specifically programmed to operate at certain times of the day and to give a particular response to an intruder. This allows the owner a greater degree of control and customization allowing for him to tailor the security system to his needs much more effectively.
With the advent of computers, previously one-dimensional security devices have now been drastically improved, allowing for electronic appliances such as lights and radios to be turned on at totally random times of the day. This gives the illusion of activity within a house, thereby deterring a potential burglar.
However, the best alarm in the world is totally redundant if it doesn?t have a power supply, whether the power is cut off due to a fault, or more sinister reasons such as a smart burglar disabling the alarm. If your entire security system is electronic, the potential consequences don?t bear thinking about.
However, this security meltdown can be avoided and quite cheaply too, as all you need is a simple battery backup system, which is currently on the market and costs from $50 to several hundred dollars. These battery packs are able to provide emergency power supply to all your vital applications. Once a would-be burglar sees that his attempts have been thwarted, he will most likely move on to easier pickings.
As mentioned, intelligent tracking means that the security system can be programmed to function in a different way dependent on different situations. For instance, you can program the system so that if you are away from the house for any length of time, no one (even if someone has a key) can access the premises.
If you want to go that extra step for security then a randomized combination for the security system is another great idea. Control to the security system is controlled by means of a combination, so think of it like an electronic safe. Now, where it gets really remarkable is that same combination can be altered at any time and stored on a special token. This dramatically limits the number of persons who know the code at any given time, thereby exponentially increasing the layer of protection yet again.
This token based system and the randomizing of the combination is crucial in order to eliminate a big weakness in such systems: people's laziness. People tend to use passwords that are obvious or easy to remember such as birthdays, initials or first names. With identity theft, it makes it much easier for a thief to gain access to the security system. The randomizing of the combination therefore means that the window of opportunity for a burglar to guess the code is severely limited.
When you begin to research technology, you will realize the scale and cost-effectiveness that such methods can and do offer.
